Somali diaspora/ migration backgrounds

For decades, Somalis have been fleeing to neighboring countries and Yemen. This for various reasons. They flee due to devastating, recurrent droughts as well as armed conflicts.
Due to clashes between government forces and the Al-Shabaab militia. Residential areas are occupied by the Al-Shabaab.
The target countries for Somalis in the EU are mainly Great Britain, Norway and Sweden.
This is explained by the chance of an advanced residence status that facilitates labor integration.
In Switzerland, were 4532 persons in the current asylum process in the year 2008 (status N or provisionally added status F).
In 2016, the numbers were similar; with 4497 people.
711 of these Somali people live in the canton of Bern.

In 2015, Somalia ranks fifth among the asylum seekers in Eritrea, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and Sri Lanka.
Due to the general situation in Somalia, almost no repatriations to Somalia are mandated.
The number of Somalis with status B or C in 2008 are 1625 people and 2016, 3877 people and increasing.
However, most of the Somali migrants remain in status F.

The largest proportion of the Somali diaspora are between 20 and 24 years of age, with more men and families, usually large families.

Since spring 2017, Somalia has placed great hope in the newly formed government with representatives from the Somali Diaspora, which is internationally recognized and strives for a federal state structure.
